Second Valence Health survey reveals consumers seek alternative health insurance coverage: 6 observations

Chicago-based Valence Health, a provider of clinical integration, population health and value-based solutions, conducted a second survey called "U.S. Attitudes Toward Health Insurance and Healthcare Reform" to discover Americans' perceptions of health insurance. This survey comes two years after Valence Health's initial survey about Americans' attitudes toward health insurance in 2013.

The survey received responses from more than 500 U.S. adults at least 25 years of age.

Here are six observations:

1. The survey revealed that Americans spend more time evaluating their insurance options, and they find coverage from sources other than their employers.

2. This survey follows the CDC report that found more than 90 percent of Americans are insured for the first time in history.

3. Only 38 percent of those surveyed receive insurance through an employer, compared to 59 percent in 2013.

4. Consumers choose health insurance based on medical expenses first, prescription coverage second and routine preventative care third, according to the survey.

5. Nearly 40 percent of those surveyed spend seven or more hours analyzing health insurance choices.

6. More than 40 percent of those surveyed paid less than one hundred dollars in out-of-pocket healthcare costs in the past year.

"The survey results show that when given a choice, individuals readily take on more responsibility when selecting a health plan, and may in fact be paying less out-of-pocket for healthcare services than other industry reports suggest," said Phil Kamp, Valence Health's chief strategy officer.
