Price: Industry needs to reduce health IT challenges

During the 2017 Health Datapalooza conference in Washington, D.C., HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD, said the industry needs to reduce the burden heath IT places on providers, according to fedscoop.

Here's what you should note:

1. Dr. Price said IT can have both "challenging" and "sometimes destructive consequences."

2. To make IT work for the industry, he argued data experts should make IT work for physicians by capturing the appropriate data to improve outcomes.

3. Despite the challenges, Dr. Price noted big data and health IT have great promise. However, the industry has to reduce its burden and realize a "one-size-fits-all" approach to data is not applicable for every provider.

4. Healthcare is placing high administrative burden on physicians, which Dr. Price noted is a core reason physicians are retiring earlier than past generations.

5. Dr. Price emphasized he understands IT's role in furthering the industry, but also said IT must overcome obstacles like interoperability to reach that end.
