Potential healthcare crisis for Floridians—10 facts to notice

Florida Legislature is failing to develop any proposals in the wake of a potential loss in subsidies for millions, according to Orlando Sentinel.

Here are 10 notes on the crisis:

1. Approximately 1.3 million Floridians may lose their healthcare subsidies in the Supreme Court declares subsidies to be unconstitutional.

2. Despite the potential increase in healthcare costs for Floridians on private plans, the Florida Legislature has not devised any viable proposal to help amend the consequences of the potential loss of subsidies.

3. With Florida having the most residents per state reliant on subsidies, recipients would bear an average premium increase of 357 percent, compared to the nationwide average of 287 percent.

4. CHAIN, a Florida advocacy group for increased health coverage, claims approximately 1.1 million individuals receiving subsidies would be unable to afford plans without subsidies, resulting in many forgoing preventative health services.

5. The House has not filed any legislation covering uninsured citizens or dealing with the cessation of subsidies.

6. The House also vetoed a Senate plan offering up to 800,000 Florida residents healthcare insurance with Medicaid funding.

7. Rep. Jason Brodeur, R-Sanford, chairman of the House Health and Human Services, explains Florida lawmakers will make decisions based on the specifics of the decision such as the enforceability date.

8. Florida Sen. Aaron Bean, a key proponent of expanded healthcare, suggests Florida Health Choices take on citizens relying on federal subsidies.

9. Florida Health Choices, however, only began selling plans last year and serves a mere 129 residents.

10. Florida could potentially have more than double the population of uninsured residents after the decision compared to when the healthcare battle between the House and Senate began.
