Physician salary up 2.5%, healthcare execs drop 12.9%: 6 notes on medical professional salary

Gaps in staffing at healthcare facilities are pushing up the average salary for medical professionals, according to a Healthcare Finance report citing eCareers' Healthcare Salary Guide.

Here are six things to know:

1. Out of the 20,000 healthcare professionals surveyed, around 87 percent report making more or the same as last year. However, some key positions including nursing saw a drop in salary.

2. The average physician and surgeon salary increased 2.5 percent in 2016, reaching $255,648. Physician assistants saw a 4.3 percent increase in salary to $105,549.

3. Healthcare executives saw a drop in salary, sinking 12.9 percent this year to $134,632. Healthcare IT professionals saw a 2.2 percent increase to $91,251.

4. Positions with the largest year-over-year salary were academics and research professionals, administrative and operations professionals and those involved with allied health. The healthcare executives and pharmacy reported the largest drop in salary.

5. The survey found overall 45 percent of healthcare professionals are satisfied with their salary and 14 percent are neutral. However, 43 percent report actively looking for better opportunities.

6. The main dissatisfiers in salaries were:

• Disparities between salaries
• Experience or pay grade for similar jobs in the region
• Working uncompensated hours
