Pennsylvania ASCs, Patient Safety Authority Collaborate to Reduce Same-Day Cancellations

A group of Pennsylvania ASCs and the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority have collaborated successfully on nursing protocols to reduce day-of-surgery cancellations, according to an announcement from the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Advisory.

The protocols include a nurse-driven preoperative screening and assessment, during which a patient's medical history and psychosocial information is used to ascertain the patient's risk for surgical complications or cancellation of surgery. ASCs are not currently required to have nurse preoperative screens.

The announcement marks 18 months of collaboration among the PPSA and 11 Pennsylvania ASCS, who achieved a 9.7 percent reduction in their rates of DOS cancellations, from 29.6 per 1000 patients to 26.8 per 1000 patients, according to a news release.
