Orthopedics, self-pay bundles & more — How OSS Health Ambulatory Surgery Center is rising above the competition

York, Pa.-based OSS Health Ambulatory Surgery Center Administrator Michele Bossi is helping her orthopedic surgery center pull away from the competition through self-pay.

OSS began offering transparent pricing to allow patients to pay completely out of pocket for certain procedures and the results have been telling.

Becker's ASC Review spoke to Ms. Bossi about the ASC, orthopedics and the transparent pricing.

Question: Your surgery center is deeply routed in orthopedics, what was the decision behind choosing this specialities? How has your center made orthopedics successful?

Michele Bossi: Our ASC is owned by orthopedic surgeons so the choice was easy for us. We wanted to provide a state of the art facility that allows our patients to have easy access to quality healthcare. Our success is built on the foundation of patient centered care and our physicians’ commitment to excellence.

Q: How do you believe those specialities will continue to grow in the future?

MB: As the baby boomer population ages, it is clear that the need for high quality low cost orthopaedic care will continue to be a huge need in communities. With the cost of insurance and high deductible plans, we are offering patients self pay bundles as well as financial counselors to help with costs.

Q: What advice would you give to an administrator looking to add orthopedics to their center?

MB: There are many concepts that would help an Administrator be successful in orthopedics beginning with focusing on low infection rates, patient education and cost per case data. It is also important to understand implant costs and have a new product committee in place. A huge expense for orthopedic surgery is the cost of the implant.

Q: OSS Surgery Center offers patients transparent prices. How do the bundles work and what benefits have you seen because of them?

MB: The physicians, physician assistants, and staff of OSS Health are dedicated to providing the highest level of quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. Our transparent pricing initiative takes this commitment to the next level by moving our business model from simply being on the list of insurance company and hospital system “allowed providers” to one that competes for providing your care on the basis of quality and value.

The prices for the procedures listed on our website include:

  • Facility fee
  • Surgeon’s fee
  • Anesthesiologist’s fee
  • Surgical implant costs
  • Lab and x-ray services necessary prior to surgery
  • Uncomplicated follow up care

The prices do not include:

  • An MRI as a diagnostic study necessary prior to the surgery
  • Consultations with specialists to determine medical risk/management
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Pathology lab services

We can provide many of these services and tests through our organization, also at similarly discounted prices, but since they are not always needed for every procedure, we did not include them in the price for the procedure. This price information can be provided prior to surgery. We have several patient financial advocates dedicated to help patients through the process.
