Orthopedic Surgery Center of Orange County's Gabrielle White on Medical Tourism

Laura Dyrda -

Medical tourism is a growing market in healthcare and some ambulatory surgery centers are taking advantage of these patients, according to an HIT Consultant report.

The report promotes price transparency within healthcare and features the Orthopedic Surgery Center of Orange County Executive Director of Ambulatory Services and Network Development Gabrielle White, RN. The center makes costs clear upfront and posts quality and patient satisfaction data online.

According to a 2009 Survey of Health Care Consumers report from Deloitte, 8 percent of respondents sought healthcare services outside their immediate community and another 40 percent said they would travel outside their immediate area of care if their physician recommended it or for a 50 percent cost savings.

The article also discusses bundling payments to make it easier for patients paying one bill instead of several different bills.

"There is a limited volume of bundled payment in the ASC setting at the moment, however, that seems to be beginning to change," said Ms. White in a September 2013 Becker's ASC Review report. "There is increasing attention toward bundled payment and the potential value of this payment model within the healthcare environment. In my opinion, ASCs are a great fit for bundled payment given the types of procedures being performed in the ambulatory setting. Today, some ASCs are providing bundled payment for the private pay patients or self-insured employers."
