Mark Reiner, MD, and Brian Katz, MD, are the first doctors to use robotics during a total extra-peritoneal hernia repair, according to a statement.
Dr. Reiner said the use of robotics was more precise and cost-effective than traditional methods. "From my experience, there is no doubt that the robot dramatically simplifies the laparoscopic procedure. It is because of this that I now believe robotics will be the future of hernia surgery," said Dr. Reiner.
According to the release, a three-armed robot allowed for 360 degree rotation, versus the 180 degree of the human wrist, and the robot had more stable movements as well as 3-D optics which deliver increased visibility.
