National Health Equity Index in the works: 7 key points

The National Collaborative for Health Equity is creating a National Health Equity Index.

Here are seven key points:

1. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded a two-year grant to the project, which will create health equity indices for all states.

2. NCHE, Texas Health Institute and the Virginia Commonwealth University Center on Society and Health will collaborate to create the Index.

3. Access to and quality of healthcare, education, environment, income, employment, housing and safety will all be measured.

4. Differences in race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geography and primary language will be assessed.

5. The goal of the committee consists of raising awareness of inequitable situations to improve healthy equity.

6. Glenn Flores, MD, Medica Research Institute's distinguished chair in health policy research has been named to the national advisory committee for the project.

7. Joining Dr. Flores on the committee will be 16 to 18 other researchers, data scientists, public health practitioners and community leaders.

"Creating a National Health Index is critical to addressing health and healthcare disparities and improving health for all populations," said Dr. Flores.
