Medical school enrollment continues to increase: 6 findings

The Association of American Medical Colleges found medical schools are increasing their enrollment numbers to meet physician demand.

AAMC sent the surveys to medical schools with preliminary accreditation or higher.

Here are six findings:

1. Since 2002 to 2003, medical school enrollment has increased 25 percent.

2. AAMC projects enrollment will have increased 30 percent by 2017 to 2018.

3. In 2006, AAMC advised medical schools to increase enrollment by 30 percent to combat the physician shortage.

4. Almost half of medical schools are concerned about their incoming students' ability to obtain residency positions of their choice following medical school.

5. Last year, 85 percent of respondents were concerned about the number of clinical training sites and the supply of qualified primary care preceptors.

6. Of those surveyed, 84 percent said they had or are planning programs to recruit a diverse student body.
