Leverage human skill to fight cyberattacks: 3 key insights

Humans are the strongest defense against cyberattacks if they possess the necessary knowledge, according to HIT Consultant.

Here are three insights into how healthcare organizations can ensure their staff is up to speed:

1. Train, a lot. Employee awareness may result in a decreased security risk between 45 percent and 70 percent, a Wombat Security Technologies and Aberdeen Group study found. The report also revealed an organization with $200 million in yearly revenue will likely lose $2.5 million annually from employee behavior-caused issues. Establish a "culture of security" in your organization, which resonates as natural among all staff members.

2. Look out for disgruntled employees. When internal employees aren't happy, they may be your organization's worst threat. Ensure a current team member is in charge of active privileged accounts and audit the system following a security breach. Also, allow staff members to access the minimum necessary information from accounts.

3. Bring cybersecurity to the forefront. The Experian Data Breach Resolution and the Ponemon Institute study found only 35 percent of respondents believed senior executives felt it was "important for team members to understand the potential organizational risks from data breaches." Successful organizations will reward employees for their security awareness.
