Iowa physician diverts $1.8M from UI Health Care, auditor says: 5 things to note

A special investigation conducted by the state revealed Brian Adams, MD, diverted $1.88 million from the University of Iowa into his personal bank account, according to WQAD 8.

Here are five things to know:

1. Dr. Adam is an orthopedic specialist previously under contract for the University of Iowa Health Care Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.

2. The diverted collections resulted from the physician improperly billing insurance companies and law for services he performed in addition to royalties and consulting fees he received from companies he developed products for.

3. A portion of Dr. Adam's activity was allegedly conflict of interest outside the scope of his contract with UIHC.

4. He placed the money into a personal bank account at MidWestOne Bank under the account name, "UIHC Orthopedics" at Hills Bank.

5. Iowa Board of Medicine records show Dr. Adams had no previous disciplinary records on file with the state.
