American Institute of Architects and Academy of Architecture for Health granted a Kyabirwa, Uganda-based surgery center an award for the ASC's design, according to arch daily.

1. The independent ASC won the "Innovations in Planning and Design Research, Built and Unbuilt" award.
2. The surgery center has a reception pavilion and a family waiting area courtyard.
3. Additionally, patients have access to an intermediate pavilion for pre-op and post-op care.
4. The surgery center's sterile pavilion houses two operating rooms.
5. Planners modeled the ASC's solar panel shade structure after banana plants located on the premises.
