How to Keep Staff Levels Efficient Without Losing Team Members: Q&A With Sarah Martin of Meridian Surgical Partners
Sarah Martin is regional vice president of operations for Meridian Surgical Partners.
Q: When our ASC doesn't have enough cases to fill an entire day's time, we know we should be sending our nurses home early but I fear that this will upset and alienate them, and we possibly lose some of them if this continues. What can we do to address both of these issues?
Sarah Martin: I believe that having honest, open communications with staff can alleviate fear and anger. I share with them that on light days, staff will have to take turns leaving early, or taking the day off. I also share what the business plans are, such as what new doctors we are marketing to and what cost-saving measures are being taken, such as contract renewal, so that they understand what management is doing to try to help the center grow and save money when volumes are down and throughout the year.
It has been my experience that people like who they work with and work for, especially if they are included in the plan of action.
