At the 6th annual Gainesville Community Health and Empowerment Summitt, medical professionals discussed the health disparities that exist between minorities and their white counterparts in the United States, according to The Gainesville Sun.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The summit aimed to raise awareness about the disproportionate mortality rate for black men diagnosed with prostate cancer compared to Hispanic and white men. Jose Trevino, MD, assistant professor at University of Florida, said, "If we allow health disparities to affect one people, they will affect all people.”

2. Keynote speaker, Kevin McBride, MD, addressed how better access to healthcare is a necessary step to reducing healthcare disparities.

3. Various strategies to combat disparities in healthcare include increasing awareness that they exist, expanding healthcare coverage, enhancing the availability and quality of healthcare facilities in underserved areas as well as raising the number of medical students choosing to practice family medicine.

4. The conference was held on Sat., Sept. 19 at the Paramount Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Gainesville, Fla.

5. Approximately 100 residents attended the center which featured presentations by several providers.
