#fixEHR: Physicians voice EHR concerns — 7 key notes

The American Medical Association and the Medical Association of Georgia hosted a meeting for physicians to discuss their frustration over electronic health record systems, according to Medpage Today.

Here are seven notes:

1. Rep. Tom Price, MD, an orthopedic surgeon, co-hosted the event and addressed the complaint concerning inconsistency in electronic health systems.

2. The AMA's event was part of their Break the Red Tape campaign, which seeks to postpone the finalization of Meaningful Use Stage 3 regulations.

3. Physicians discussed reduced productivity, security issues with private patient medical records, interoperability and government regulation.

4. A handful of physicians tweeted during the meeting using the hashtag #fixEHR.

5. Proponents of EHRs state they provide a wealth of benefits and the days of digging through files or relying on memory are long gone.

6. EHRs allows for superior patient safety and minimizes errors. For example, nurses have the ability to build in safety checks for patients.

7. EHRs are often not configured appropriately, leading to frustrations. EHRS should be treated like clinical tools rather than merely billing machines.
