Dr. Vladimir Alexander on the forefront of outpatient total joint surgery — 5 points

Orthopedic surgeon Vladimir Alexander, MD, is a pioneer in outpatient total joint replacement procedures.

Here are five points:

1. Typically, patients undergoing total joint replacement surgery spend three days to four days in the hospital post-op.

2. However, Dr. Alexander has developed a total joint outpatient program at Alexander Orthopaedic Associates in Largo, Fla. He is the founder of Alexander Orthopaedic Associates.

3. Alexander Orthopaedic Associates was the first practice in the Tampa Bay area to perform outpatient total joint.

4. Dr. Alexander projects within the next five years to 10 years, outpatient surgery will be the norm in orthopedics. Prime candidates for outpatient total joint include healthy patients under 65 who have a good home support system. Ideal candidates should also be mobile.

5. Prior to surgery, Alexander Orthopaedic's mobile therapy team preps the patient's home for safety precautions. After the procedure, a patient recovers at the center for a few hours and then a staff member goes with the patient to his or her home to ensure a smooth transition. The day after the procedure, a team goes to the patient's home to assess a patient's recovery.
