Dr. Jonathan Till on femotosecond laser surgery: 4 key notes

Jonathan Till, MD, of Southwest Virginia Eye Center in Roanoke, is the only ophthalmologist in Roanoke to offer femotosecond laser surgery to remove cataracts, reports The Roanoke Times.

Here are four things to know about Southwest Virginia Eye Center, as other centers in the area follow their laser-treatment lead:

1. Dr. Till, who has been practicing for 30 years, feels laser procedures are the future, and take less time, less pain, and greater exactness, according to the report.

2. Although traditional cataract surgery involves the physician using a blade to cut in the cornea, femotosecond surgery uses a laser to soften and break the cataract, as well as make the cuts.

3. The laser surgery involves a computer and can make geometric cuts, with a shorter recovery time, according to the report.

4. Dr. Till leases the laser machine, which adds $1,200 to the cost of surgery, typically not covered by insurance.
