Dr. David Folden develops Folden Femto Dissector: 5 key notes

Ophthalmologist and AmSurg partner David Folden, MD, created a new instrument to improve the process of opening femtosecond laser-created corneal incisions for cataract surgery.

Here are five quick notes about the technology:

1. The Folden Femto Dissector was designed to improve the process of opening femtosecond laser-created corneal incisions during cataract surgery, and it increases the surgeon's control during the procedure.

2. The dissector is double-ended and includes a differentiated tip and edge design. The technology combines the semi-blunted leading tip with a sharp edge to increase efficiency and create better outcomes.

3. The femtosecond laser creates all corneal incisions for a bladeless surgery and pre-treats and softens the cataract. As a result, the surgeon needs less energy to remove the cataract and the swelling and inflammation is reduced.

4. The femtosecond laser also treats astigmatism, improves visual quality and reduces the need to wear glasses after cataract surgery.

5. There was a lot of enthusiasm and feedback from surgeons about the Folden Femto Dissector at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual meeting. It became commercially available to surgeons in the first quarter of 2015.
