Dr. Ashok Kar performs miVIP Surgery Centers’ first HIFU Prostate Tissue Ablation with Sonablate

miVIP Surgery Center’s Tustin location is the first center in Southern California to offer High Intensity Focused Ultrasound tissue ablation with Sonablate for a prostate cancer outpatient treatment.

Here are five points:

1. Ashok Kar, MD, performed the center’s first two U.S.-based prostate tissue ablation procedures on Dec. 12, 2015.

2. Sonablate is a FDA-approved device used for ultrasound ablation of prostate tissue.

3. Sonablate technology has been used on about 15,000 patients in more than 30 countries since its creation more than 15 years ago.

4. Dr. Kar has worked with Sonablate technology since 2012, treating patients overseas.

5. He praises the technology, as it helps patients retain continence and sexual function.

“I am excited to offer HIFU as an alternative to surgery or radiation to selected patients,” said Dr. Kar. “HIFU has been used globally for the past 14 years and is now available to us in the United States”
