DC passes bill on LGBT health issues — 4 takeaways

Washington D.C. passed a bill on Tuesday that requires healthcare professionals to get cultural competency training on health issues that impact the LGBT community, according to the National Sun Times.

Here are four takeaways:

1. The training must provide specific information of health risks that are particular to the LGBT community and how to handle confidential and sensitive information.

2. If signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser (Dem.-D.C.), the bill will undergo a 30 day congressional review period.

3. Mayor Bowser previously backed the measure and is expected to sign it.

4. According to a 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey, 19 percent of transgender people have been refused care by a physician due to bias, and 28 percent have postponed medical care when they were sick or injured due to fear of discrimination.
