Christmas bonuses for staff members: 2 strategies to avoid

Christmas bonuses can be a great way for employers to show their staff that they and their services are valued, according to a Medscape Business of Medicine report.

Administrators and practice managers are planning for holiday bonuses and creating holiday bonus budgets. Don't over do it, as entering the new year with debt places undue pressure on the facility and all those who work there. According to the report, there are two ways of delivering bonuses to avoid:

1. Giving the bonus on Dec. 24: This does not leave employees with enough time to use the bonus for their friends and family, and also causes them stress as they do not know whether the bonus is given and how much it will be.

2. Simply adding the bonus to a pay cycle's direct deposit: This lacks a personal touch. Giving the employee a check or a cash card in person sends a message of appreciation more clearly.

The report also notes that employers should be careful when selecting physical gifts for staff members. While physical gifts can also be a good way to show staff appreciation, employers must be wary of the downsides — namely, that the gift may not be received in the spirit in which it was given, according to the report.
