California counties provide healthcare to undocumented immigrants — 5 key facts

Contra Costa County along with 46 other California counties will administer non-emergency care to illegal immigrants, according to npr.

Here are five facts:

1. Contra Costa Care will give 3,000 individuals a "medical home" at a community health center and will benefit 16 percent of the projected undocumented population in the county.

2. The program aims to reduce emergency room visits and save money by giving access to preventative care.

3. Legislators in California and Gov. Jerry Brown are implementing a budget deal to give undocumented children from low-income families public healthcare coverage. The deal is expected to take effect in May 2016.

4. Recent proposals to extend health coverage for undocumented adults did not pass in the state legislature. Tanya Broder, staff attorney at the National Immigration Law Center, believes lawmakers will revisit this issue next year.

5. There are an estimated 1 million uninsured undocumented immigrants in California alone.
