Oregon Outpatient Surgery Center Treats First Veteran Through Free Surgery Program

Ellie Rizzo -

Oregon Outpatient Surgery Center in Bridgeport has performed its first free surgery in its "Save Our Veterans" surgery program on Evan Johnson, 32, an Iraq veteran, according to a report from The Times.

The surgery program, which is scheduled to begin July 4, covers preoperative and postoperative services as well as surgery for veterans in need of surgical care.

Mr. Johnson had been waiting for the V.A. to schedule him an ankle surgery for a painful ankle lesion. His name was put on a months-long waiting list, so Mr. Johnson decided to submit his name for the "Save Our Veterans" program. Because of his condition, the Oregon Outpatient Surgery Center was able to schedule his surgery before the official "Save Our Veterans" program launch. His surgery was complete June 11, according to the report.

Despite the delays, Mr. Johnson feels no ill will toward the V.A. "They are just taking care of so many people, it's crazy," he told the Times.
