Blue Star Families, a nonprofit network for military families, and United Health Foundation, a nonprofit organization improving healthcare, are joining forces to train and support military caregivers.
Here are five points.
1. United Health Foundation funded the new initiative, The Blue Star Cares: Military Caregiver Online Interactive Program, with a $750,000 grant.
2. The program will enhance caregiver skills so they are better equipped to care for wounded warriors.
3. Using avatar technology, the program offers interactive computer simulations of real scenarios.
4. Sen. Richard Burr and Congressmen Scott Peters and Sanford Bishop support the program and are working with military experts to establish the best program.
5. The program will be piloted over three years.
"There are many military caregivers that don't identify as caregivers when they're not in the hospital or have unseen injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, which can be isolating," said Callie Barr, Marine Corps spouse and caregiver.
