Blue Belt's Navio Surgical System exploding worldwide — 6 things to know

Blue Belt Technologies, a medical device company focused on the robotic Navio Surgical System for knee surgery, is going global, according to a Post Gazette report.

The Pittsburgh-based company had the first knee surgery performed in the United States using the Navio Surgical System in 2012, and several hundred procedures have been performed since then.

Here are five things to know about the company's growth over the past few years:

1. The staff at Blue Belt has grown five-fold over the past three years.

2. A second location in the United States was opened in Minneapolis; an additional sales office in the United Kingdom also opened.

3. In 2013, the company received FDA approval for the Stride Unicondylar Knee and plans to pursue approval for a full knee replacement device in the next year.

4. Blue Belt also plans to expand to hip procedures in the future.

5. The company has sold 43 systems worldwide at an average price of $400,000 to $450,000 each.

6. There are an average of 90 cases performed using the Navio technology each month in the United States, France, Great Britain, Australia and Turkey.
