Errors in patients' medical records are not an uncommon occurrence. Patients must be diligent in checking their medical records to verify the listed information, according to the Washington Post.
Here are five notes:
1. Patients have the right to view and obtain a copy of his/her medical record under HIPAA.
2. Patients have the right to have errors in medical records amended to reflect the correct information.
3. Electronic records allow patients to readily view their records. Yet, electronic records often have mistakes in records due to data input or transcription errors.
4. In a 2012 study, approximately 300 reports were examined showing faulty records at Pennsylvania hospitals where errors in electronic medical records could become magnified when inaccurate information was shared with providers.
5. Patients are additionally advised to check their records to ensure the billing is correct and should contact their insurance provider if they note a discrepancy.
