ASCs request more time to respond to Cigna overbilling lawsuit: 4 things to know

Cigna Health and Life Insurance has filed a multi-million lawsuit against 11 Indiana ASCs for allegedly using a "fee forgiveness" model to attract out-of-network patients. Indiana Specialty Surgery Center in Bloomington, along with the other 10 ASCs involved in the lawsuit, has requested more time to respond, according to a WFHB report.

Here are four things to know.

1. Indiana Specialty Surgery Center is charged with overbilling $590,000, according to the report.

2. The lawsuit alleges the 11 ASCs collectively overbilled more than $6 million.

3. The surgery centers were served the lawsuit at separate times. Representatives from the centers requested a judge allow an extension to give the centers time to respond as a group, according to the report.

4. The centers plan to file a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. If the request for an extension is granted, the centers will have to file for a motion of dismissal by Sept. 14, according to the report.
