ASC advocates debrief Congress on outpatient surgery benefits

Members of the ambulatory surgery center community briefed Congress about outpatient surgery center and innovation in the space.

"ASCs have, for years, pioneered advances in healthcare and continue to be at the forefront of healthcare innovation," said ASCA CEO William Prentice. "From improving patient outcomes to curbing surgical costs and reducing wait times, ASCs are indispensable in our healthcare system. Policymakers must ensure that patients have improved access to the vital services ASCs provide."

ASCA hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill today and discussed several aspects of the ASC industry, including quality and cost-savings for payers. Total joints were discussed as a major example of how ASCs transform same-day surgery for patients.

"Total joint replacements are just one example of how ambulatory surgery centers are transforming the same-day surgical experience for patients," said Craig McAllister, MD, partner of Proliance Surgeons in Seattle, Wash., and chief medical officer for the SwiftPath program and head of joint replacement at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland, Wash. "ASCs across the country are making our healthcare system smarter and more patient-focused, even as they continue to generate savings for patients, insurers and the Medicare program."
