Apple purchases medical startup Gliimpse: 6 thoughts

Apple purchased Gliimpse, a three-year-old startup that was attempting to help patients make sense of their medical record, the Wall Street Journal reports. Here are six thoughts.

1. The deal was completed earlier in the year, but was not confirmed until this week.

2. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on why the company was purchasing the startup.

3. Apple's iPhone sales numbers are experiencing their first slump in sales since 2007.

4. Apple has expressed interest in expanding into the healthcare market. Apple has made HealthKit, a data repository that tracks a user's health, a part of their iOS, Apple's operating system, ecosystem.

5. Gliimpse is free for consumers. It makes its money from healthcare providers and software developers who pay to use the service.

6. Brandon Ballinger, co-founder of Cardiogram, said Apple could use the app as a way to incorporate electronic medical records into its device using HealthKit.
