AMA opposes American Health Care Act; outlines issues in letter to Congress — 4 key points

The American Medical Association wrote a letter to Congress, emphasizing the part of the American Health Care Act that would negatively impact patients.

Here are four key points:

1. The AMA does not support the AHCA as written, because of the bill's likely impact on healthcare insurance coverage through the rollback of Medicaid expansions.

2. AMA President Andrew Gurman, MD, commented the association can also not back the bill because it replaces "income-based premium subsidies with age-based tax credits," which will result in more expensive coverage for Americans.

3. Further, the letter notes the AMA does not support the intent to repeal the Prevention and Public Health Fund.

4. The AMA also outlines its opposition to targeting affiliates of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
