Alshemari Instruments launches a new surgical needle — 5 things to know about the Alshemari Needle Driver

The Alshemari Needle Driver is the sole needle driver on the market that enables a surgeon to suture vertically without hand twisting.

Here are five things to know about the device.

1. Hasan Alshemari, MD, a pediatric otolaryngology specialist at the Zain Hospital in Kuwait, devised the Alshemari Needle Driver.

2. With the device, a surgeon can achieve enhanced accuracy and precision when suturing tissues in narrow spaces or long reaching areas.

3. Dr. Alshemari's needle driver has a lever clamp that ensures the needle is firmly held in a neutral position. The driver holds the needle parallel to the handles, rotated 90 degrees from traditional needle drivers.

4. Surgeons can use the needle for ENT procedures as well as throughout the body during open, laparoscopic and microscopic surgeries.

5. A fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, Dr. Dr. Alshemari also serves as a scientist at the Sabah Al-Ahmed Center for Giftedness and Creativity. He was a nominee for the Best Young Surgeon Award in Dubai in 2014.
