ACS Issues New Standards for Pediatric Ambulatory Surgery

Ellie Rizzo -

The American College of Surgeons issued new standards for pediatric safety for both inpatient and outpatient pediatric surgical facilities.

The new standards were created "to ensure that all infants and children in the United States receive care in a surgical environment matched to their individual medical, emotional and social needs," according to an ACS news release.

New standards for ambulatory surgery centers performing surgical procedures on children include:

  • Designated preoperative and recovery areas for pediatric patients
  • A pediatric anesthesiologist must sedate all children less than one year of age.
