AAFP seeks additional primary care funding from legislators — 5 thoughts

The American Academy of Family Physicians sent testimony to the Senate and House imploring lawmakers to fund federal programs supporting primary care, according to AFFP.

Here are five thoughts:

1. In their testimony, AAFP cautions the aging population will fuel the looming physician shortage.

2. The organization cited studies which found more than 66 percent of health centers are seeking at least one family physician.

3. By 2035, our nation will face a projected shortage of nearly 33,000 primary care physicians.

4. To combat the shortage, the AAFP recommends legislators back the Primary Care Training and Enhancement program, which trains family physicians. The AAFP asks Congress to expand the program's funding from $39 million to $59 million next year.

5. In their testimony, the organization asked for an additional $70 million for the National Health Service, bringing its total funding to $380 million.
