A snapshot of today's physician: 8 things to know

Physicians are the backbone of the ASC industry. Here are eight things to know about their day-to-day lives, practice models and more, according to a Merritt Hawkins infographic.

1. Physicians work an average of 53 hours per week. The majority of physicians (81 percent) report their workload is at capacity or overextended.

2. On average, physicians see nearly 20 (19.5) patients per day. Physicians report spending 20 percent of their days on paperwork and non-clinical responsibilities.

3.  Half of physicians today would not recommend medicine as a career path, and 39 percent of them plan to accelerate their path to retirement. Additionally, 56 percent of physicians say morale is "very" or "somewhat" negative.

4. The majority of physicians (85 percent) have adopted an EMR.

5. On average, physicians report 49 percent of patients are covered by Medicare or Medicaid. On the other hand, 38 percent of physicians either limit or do not see Medicare or Medicaid patients.

6. A third of physicians are participating in either state or federal health insurance exchanges, and 26 percent report participation in an accountable care organization.

7. When it comes to practice model, just 17 percent of physicians are in solo practice, but 35 percent overall are in private practice. Half of physicians report being in a group of 11 or more. More than half of physicians (53 percent) are employed by either a hospital or group.

8. A portion of physicians (13 percent) are planning to switch to a concierge practice model.
