Managers of the future, listen up! The workplace is evolving, and with it, so are the demands upon those who manage employees. The following traits and capabilities are integral to managers who aspire to be cutting-edge and visionary in their leadership. Here are nine characteristics of managers of the future, as adapted from Forbes.
1. Is also a leader. Being a manager is not only about delegating tasks — it is also about being a creative thinker.
2. Follows from the front. Managers must remove obstacles to make employees more successful.
3. Understands technology. Managers can't be tech dinosaurs. They must make an effort to have a grasp of modern technology and the ways it can be leveraged in the workplace.
4. Leads by example.
5. Embraces vulnerability. Managers of the future know their limitations and are not afraid to ask for help.
6. Believes in collective intelligence. Oftentimes, the manager is only a decision facilitator, as the team will have the crucial information to make business calls.
7. Is a fire-starter. While challenging convention is risky, managers of the future know the potential benefits to doing so can often outweigh those risks.
8. Gives real-time feedback. This can be far more effective than annual reviews for both employee performance and morale.
9. Understands boundaries. Respecting employee space is a must. Connectivity does not automatically mean an employee is or should always be available.
