7 things to know about the 2016 Main Residency Match

Medical enrollment continues to increase with graduates vying for spots in leading residency programs spanning the country.

Here are seven things to know about the 2016 Main Residency Match:

1. Of the U.S. seniors who obtained residency positions, 79.2 percent received one of their three top choices.

2. Last year, 2,982 active osteopathic students/graduates submitted a rank order list of programs. Of this figure, 2,396 students matched to first-year post-graduate residency slots.

3. Compared to 2015, the number of active U.S. citizen international medical graduates rose by 309 students. These students had a 53.9 percent match rate, the highest rate since 2005.

4. Of the non-U.S. citizen IMGs, the number of matched residency slots continues to rise at 50.5 percent in 2016. This figure is up from 49.4 percent in 2015.

5. Across specialties, 6,587 U.S. seniors matched to residency slots in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics.

6. In 2016, internal medicine positions totaled 7,024, up from 5,277 positions in 2012.

7. Since 2012, the number of foreign-trained physicians matching in internal medicine has jumped, with 61.9 percent of these physicians obtaining internal medicine residencies in 2016.
