7 things to know about LASIK surgery

Surgeons across the country are using Laser in-situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, to treat vision problems, according to LasikEyeSurgeryCorrection.com.

Here are seven things to know about LASIK:

1. The FDA approved the procedure in patients over 18-years-old.

2. The ideal LASIK patient is 21-years-old as patients under 21 are more likely to have a change in refractive error.

3. Each year, providers perform 700,000 LASIK procedures.

4. LASIK procedures have a relatively high success rate with literature showing patients achieve 20/20 vision more than 90 percent of the time.

5. Following LASIK surgery, people achieve 20/40 vision 99 percent of the time.

6. An American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery analysis found patients reported a 95.4 percent satisfaction rate after undergoing a LASIK procedure.

7. The risk of a major complication that may permanently reduce correctable vision is between 0.2 percent and 0.4 percent.
