7 things for ASC leaders to know for Thursday

Here are seven things for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for Sept. 18, 2014.

AHRQ opens enrollment in ASC safety program.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Safety Program for Ambulatory Surgery is now accepting enrollment for Cohort 4 of the program, which will launch Sept. 29.

ENT took selfie with anesthetized Joan Rivers.
The unnamed, unauthorized ENT physician present in Joan Rivers' procedure room took a selfie with her while she was under anesthesia. An unidentified staff member with Yorkville Endoscopy in New York City told CNN that after former Medical Director of the clinic Lawrence Cohen, MD, finished his work, the ENT performed a vocal cord biopsy on Ms. Rivers, snapping a selfie with the star shortly before she went into cardiac arrest.

ASCA launches quality and safety resource.
The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association has created a website resource page on quality, safety and accreditation concerns. The website covers federal and state requirements for Medicare participation in comparison to HOPD standards. The page also provides a brief history of quality measurement in ASCs as it concerns the ASC Quality Collaboration and CMS' national quality reporting program.

North Valley Surgery Center opens in Scottsdale.
North Valley Surgery Center, one of the largest surgery centers in Arizona, opened in Scottsdale. The surgery center is expected to perform approximately 12,000 procedures per year. North Valley Surgery Center is a partnership between physicians, Sovereign Healthcare and Scottsdale Healthcare. Sovereign Healthcare, based in Mission Viejo, Calif., manages the center.

478k people at risk of losing insurance or subsidies this month.
Due to data inconsistencies related to immigration or citizenship status, 115,000 people who purchased health insurance off of the state and federal-run health exchanges are at risk of losing their coverage at the end of September. Read the full report on Becker's Hospital Review.

Norwalk Hospital to hold gala for new ASC.
Norwalk (Conn.) Hospital will hold a gala to benefit its new ambulatory surgery center Sept. 27. The new ASC is still under construction and will open its doors January 2015

Dr. Paul Ruggieri authors book on price transparency.
Paul Ruggieri, MD, FACS, a general surgeon with Fall River, Mass.-based Truesdale Surgical Associates, has written a book on price transparency titled "The Cost of Cutting." Dr. Ruggieri also wrote "Confessions of a Surgeon" published in January 2012, which provides outsiders with an accessible look at the reality of life as a surgeon.
