Bundle lowers SSI infection risk
Mayo Clinic researchers found a surgical site infection reduction bundle greatly lowered the risk of a SSI. The relative risk reduction for organ and space SSI was 73.3 percent.

Anesthesiologist charged for overdosing between surgeries; faces formal arraignment
Gregory G. Theodore, MD, has been charged for overdosing between surgeries at the Carlisle (Pa.) Regional Medical Center and is heading to trial. The state Attorney General's Office charged Dr. Theodore with "the administration of a controlled substance and acquiring or possession of controlled substance."

CMS updates Medicare Part B data
CMS released its updated Physician and Other Supplier Utilization and Payment public use data, which includes summarized information on Part B services and procedures provided to Medicare beneficiaries. By the end of this year, CMS intends to tie 85 percent of all traditional Medicare payments to quality or value.

Rule may double providers' healthcare fraud penalties
The U.S. Railroad Retirement Board published a rule raising the fraud penalty providers may face for each claim. The rule increases the minimum fraud penalty from $5,500 to $10,781 for each false claim, and also increases maximum penalties from $11,000 per claim to $21,563 per claim.

Python falls from ceiling at Tacoma hospital
A visitor snuck the snake into the hospital while the snake's owner was in the hospital. When the owner went home from the hospital, he realized the python had escaped the carrier and immediately notified Tacoma General. The snake was found and reunited with his owner a month later.

GOP claims CMS official fell $178M short
House Republicans are claiming Andy Slavitt, CMS acting administrator, mislead Congress when he said states returned more than $200 million for ACA marketplace funds to the federal government. The House Energy and Commerce Committee report found states have only returned $21.5 million.
