The American Medical Association wrote a letter to Congress, emphasizing parts of the American Health Care Act that would negatively impact patients.

Billions in payer benefits slipped in ACA replacement
The Republican's ACA replacement, the American Health Care Act, could benefit payers drastically if passed. The proposal removes the ACA's $500,000 deduction cap, which limits the amount of executive salaries payers can deduct as a business expense.

Novant, Wake Forest apply for CON for expansions, including ASC
Charlotte, N.C.-based Novant Health and Winston Salem, N.C.-based Wake Forest Baptist Medical each filed CON applications for new facilities at their Clemmons and Davis campuses, respectively.

Senate will present obstacle for American Health Care Act
The American Health Care Act — the Republicans' ACA replacement plan — faces an uncertain future in the Senate. The bill will be up against a Senate with 52 GOP seats, allowing for a loss of two GOP votes, since Vice President Mike Pence can break the 50-50 tie.

Unity Healthcare buys back full ownership of Unity Surgical Center from Franciscan Health
Lafayette, Ind.-based Unity Healthcare repurchased ownership of the Unity Surgical Center in Lafayette, Ind., from Indianapolis-based Franciscan Health.

Gastro Health acquires South Palm GI
Miami-based Gastro Health acquired Delray Beach, Fla.-based South Palm GI, P.A. The South Palm providers will continue to practice out of the clinic. Franciscan Health previously owned a portion of the joint venture surgery center and InnerVision Imaging Center; Unity Healthcare bought back ownership in both entities effective March 1, 2017.

Knoxville Orthopaedic Center performs first outpatient hip replacement
The Knoxville (Tenn.) Orthopaedic Center performed its first outpatient hip replacement in the city and center in February 2017. Matthew Naduad, MD, of the center, performed the operation on a man at the surgery center. The man made a full recovery.
