Online tutorials improve knee surgery patient's understanding, experience
A web-based tutorial can increase a patient's understanding of knee surgery and result in better patient experience, according to a new study published in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery. Postoperatively, knowledge assessment showed that intervention group patients were significantly more likely to accurately identify which meniscus had been operated on. They were also more likely to know whether a chondroplasty had been performed.

Top 10 states with highest monthly Medicaid & CHIP enrollment
According to Kaiser Family Foundation's State Health Facts:

1. California — 12.25 million    
2. New York — 6.39 million    
3. Texas — 4.65 million
4. Florida — 3.48 million    
5. Illinois — 3.17 million

7. Pennsylvania — 2.54 million

Aria Health project could include surgery center
Aria Health, based in Philadelphia, plans to build a health village in Lower Makefield, Pa., according to a Bucks County Courier Times report. The health village would be built on a 41-acre plot of land in the township. Aria Health plans to include an ambulatory care center, urgent care center, medical offices and surgical center, according to the report.

Healthcare fraud: A $98B industry
The United States healthcare industry is losing billions of dollars from healthcare fraud. Donald Berwick, MD, former head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and Andrew Hackbarth of RAND, estimated fraud added $98 billion to annual Medicare and Medicaid spending. Healthcare fraud is not localized in one area, but is a national problem occurring in major cities across the United States.

St. Mary's new $10M outpatient facility
St. Mary's plans to build a $10 million outpatient facility, called Westside Crossing, to serve community members in Evansville, Ind., according to Courier & Press. Gwen Sandefur, St. Mary's COO, stated Westside's opening is indicative of the community's aim of moving patients to ambulatory centers close to developments on the East side, North side and West side.

The Shrewsbury project, UMass Memorial opening surgical center
UMass Memorial Health care proposed a project to build a new facility in a vacant lot in Shrewsbury, Mass. The proposed 40,000 square-foot facility would cost $31 million and consist of nine operating rooms as a joint venture with Shields Health Care Group of Quincy. UMass Memorial logged 41,751 outpatient surgeries in Worcester during 2014, a 6 percent increase from the previous five years.

AHRQ grants $52M to Dartmouth, NBER, RAND
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality plans to fund three "Centers of Excellence" to study how high-performing healthcare systems promote evidence-based practices in delivering care. The three grants, totaling about $52 million over five years, will be granted to Dartmouth College, the National Bureau of Economic Research and RAND Corporation.
