7 things for ASC leaders to know for Thursday — August 13, 2015

Here are seven updates:

1. The Department of Heath and Human Services announced it will spend $169 million to open 266 new health center sites across the nation using the Affordable Care Act's funding.

2. AmSurg acquired Bay Area Anesthesia in Tampa, Fla. AmSurg is seeking to grow its anesthesia service line through the recent acquisition.

3. Various companies are attempting to make healthcare accessible through a phone's app. The effort to "Uberize" healthcare would entail scheduling transportation to the physician, confirming the physician was in your health insurance network and ensuring the physician was available within the hour.

4. The five largest health insurers in the United States released their financial results for the second quarter of 2015.  Here are the companies' financial results:

•    Aetna reported a net income of $731.8 million on $15.2 billion in revenue.
•    Anthem reported a net income of $859.1 million on revenue of $20 billion.
•    Cigna reported net income of $588 million on $9.5 million in revenue.
•    Humana reported net income of $431 million on revenue of $13.7 billion.
•    UnitedHealth Group reported net income of $1.6 billion on $36.3 billion in revenue.

5. Mark Price was named president of DaVita Healthcare Partners Colorado market. He previously headed ChenMed's management services organization.

6. Oswego Hospital agreed to pay almost $1.5 million to the federal government and the state of New York to resolve violations of the False Claims Act that the hospital self disclosed. The hospital identified several billing improprieties in its behavioral health services department during an internal interview.

7. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield gave two CarePoint Health hospitals nearly $350,000 for superior patient safety.
