Surgical 'black box' could help prevent errors.
Canadian researchers have developed and are testing a surgical "black box" to record surgeries and reduce errors. The black box is a recorder for data from cameras positioned in the operating room. The idea is that surgeons can learn from their mistakes by watching the footage to pinpoint root causes of errors, improve technique or prep for future surgeries.

Mayo Clinic 1st to offer noninvasive stool DNA colorectal cancer test.
Cologuard, a DNA-based colorectal cancer test, recently earned FDA approval. Now, Mayo Clinic will become the first healthcare provider to offer the new test. The Exact Sciences test was developed using Mayo Clinic research. Mayo gastroenterologist David Ahlquist, MD, is the co-inventor of the device.

Surgery Center of Oklahoma featured for price transparency.
Oklahoma City-based Surgery Center of Oklahoma has been featured in an front-page article on price transparency in healthcare on the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity website, watchdog.org. The article interviews the center’s owner, Keith Smith, MD, as well as a surgeon at the center, James Totoro, MD, and explores the place of free-market pricing in medicine.

Stormont-Vail HealthCare breaks ground on new surgery center.
Stormont-Vail HealthCare, based in Topeka, Kan., has broken ground on an 87,657-square-foot, $20 million surgery center. The Stormont-Vail orthopedic surgery and same-day surgery departments will move to the first floor of the new facility.

Digestive Health Center partners with LifeLinc Anesthesia.
Memphis-based LifeLinc Anesthesia is adding four new locations, including Digestive Health Center in Ocean Springs, Miss. LifeLinc employs more than 100 anesthesia providers for its clients.

AAPC launches job search website.
AAPC has launched the Beta release of CareerHealth.com, a website designed to serve as a recruiting resource for the healthcare industry. With the Beta release completion, the website will offer access to more than 500,000 job postings.
