Founder of first Pennsylvania ophthalmic ASC dies.
Joseph F. Pugliese, MD, founder of the first ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center in Pennsylvania, died at the age of 87. Dr. Pugliese trained under the developer of phacoemulsification for eye surgery and introduced the concept to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania.

Most PPACA enrollees happy with plans.
The majority (68 percent) of people who purchased Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act marketplace coverage during the first open enrollment period are happy with their plans, according to a survey conducted by The Commonwealth Fund. Read the full report on Becker's Hospital Review.

Robotic surgery training increases in colorectal surgery field.
Intuitive Surgical hosted 88 colorectal surgery residents at its fourth annual Colorectal Fellowship Training Program. When the training program first began, only nine residents participated.

AAAASF surveyor training to be held in Chicago.
The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities will hold a surveyor training workshop in Chicago on Friday, Oct. 10. The AAASF has a peer-based accreditation process and trains healthcare professionals to survey participating facilities.

Premier Health acquires Ohio ASC for $2M.
Premier Health's Middletown, Ohio-based Atrium Medical Center has acquired Southwest Ohio Surgery Center, also in Middletown. The $2 million deal with the largest ASC in Middletown closed Sept. 16. The center will continue to operate with the same physicians and staff.

Texas Health South to build ASC.
Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth has broken ground on its $40 million expansion, which will include an outpatient surgery center. The expansion is slated to add another medical office building to the campus. The five-story building will house an endoscopy and outpatient surgery center, an operating room observation deck for families and visitors, physician office space and a parking garage.

Big data company partners with HCI3 for bundled payments initiative.
HealthQx, a big data analysis company, has partnered with the Healthcare Incentives Improvement Institute to enable bundled payment solutions. "Our unique combination of national big data combined with leading-edge analytics in ClarityQx, makes bundled payments truly viable and scalable for payers and providers," said HealthQx COO Bill Conlan.
