7 things for ASC leaders to know for Monday

Here are seven news updates for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for Nov. 24, 2014.

Surgery Partners to divest ASC in FTC settlement.
The Surgery Partners acquisition of Symbion has closed, but as required by the Federal Trade Commission, Surgery Partners will divest Blue Springs Surgery Center in Orange City, Fla. The Surgery Partners-Symbion deal would have consolidated ownership of the only two multispecialty ASCs in Orange City, the root of the FTC complaint.

Brookwood Medical Center sues to block ASC construction.
Birmingham, Ala.-based Brookwood Medical Center has filed a lawsuit to stop fellow Birmingham provider St. Vincent's Health System from constructing a surgery center planned at its expansion facility, One Nineteen. While St. Vincent's obtained a certificate of need for the ASC in June 2009, Brookwood claims that the hospital didn't meet Alabama's legal requirements to get a "firm commitment or obligation," delaying construction of the ASC beyond what Alabama law allows, which would render the CON void.

Pennsylvania adds 4 ASCs in 2013.
A study conducted by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council has analyzed the state's ambulatory surgery market during 2013. The number of ASCs in the state increased by four in 2013 and the average revenue per ASC visit increased 4.8 percent to $1,084.

Foundation HealthCare revenue increases 16%.
Foundation HealthCare reported $27.4 million in revenue for the quarter, up 16 percent from the third quarter of 2013. The company's adjusted EBITDA was $3.5 million, up 26 percent from $2.8 million in the prior year's period.

FDA clears device to improve adenoma detection rate.
The FDA granted Avantis Medical's Third Eye Panoramic device for colonoscopy 510(k) clearance.  The Third Eye Panoramic device is designed for attachment to the tip of colonoscopes and grants physicians greater visibility of the colon.
 
Physician pay hits a plateau.
As many medical practices struggle to stay solvent, almost half of physicians report their incomes have plateaued over the last year. Read the full report on Becker's Hospital Review.

Majority of physicians report patient satisfaction has no bearing on income.
