Surgery Partners will acquire Symbion for $792 million. Symbion is currently owned by private equity firm Crestview Partners. After the close of the deal, Surgery Partners will operate 100 facilities in 27 states.
CBO: national healthcare spending to increase to 22% of GDP by 2038.
The Congressional Budget Office's 2013 long-term budget outlook report predicts that national healthcare spending will increase to 22 percent of the gross domestic product by 2038 under current law. Read the full report on Becker's Hospital Review.
AMA policy addresses physician shortage.
The American Medical Association voted last week to support innovative education models to address physician shortages in undersupplied specialties and underserved areas. The new policy encourages the federal and state government, as well as private payers, to satisfactorily fund graduate medical education and increase the number of available GME slots. Arete Surgical Center hosts M6-C artificial spine disc trial.
Kenneth Pettine, MD, recently completed the first series of M6-C implants as part of the U.S. FDA clinical trial at Arete Surgical Center in Johnstown, Colo. The trial compares single-level cervical disc replacement to single-level fusion.
Island Digestive Health Center opens in New York.
Physicians Endoscopy has officially opened Island Digestive Health Center in West Islip, N.Y. The endoscopy center is joint venture between Physicians Endoscopy and five physicians. With the opening of Island Digestive Health Center, Physicians Endoscopy now operates 31 partnered facilities in 13 states.
University of Maryland Medical System to break ground on $7M ASC.
The University of Maryland Medical System plans to break ground on the $7 million Surgery Center at Queenstown (Md.) in July. The 11,000-square-foot surgery center will be located at the Shore Medical Pavilion and managed by University of Maryland Shore Regional Health.
Surgical Center of Connecticut opens in new location.
In November 2013, Merritt Healthcare partnered with 18 physicians to purchase an interest in the Surgical Center of Connecticut. The surgery center has now officially relocated and opened in its new Bridgeport, Conn., location.
