Ellis Hospital is crowdfunding its new surgery center
Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y., is crowdfunding its new surgery center, the Center for Surgical & Interventional Medicine. The project is expected to cost $19.4 million. Antonio Civitella, a hospital board member, introduced the idea of crowdfunding. He serves as the CEO of Transfinder, which offers support for school bus routing and scheduling, according to the report. The crowdfunding effort is being run through the site Fundabilities. Transfinder intends to match the first $5,000 in donations.

Dr. Daniel Lieberman now sees patients at Phoenix Spine Surgery Center
Daniel Lieberman, MD, is accepting patients for outpatient surgery at Phoenix Spine Surgery Center. Dr. Lieberman founded Phoenix Spine Surgery Center in Goodyear, Ariz., as the first spine-focused ASC in the West Valley.

Baseball hall of famer Tommy Lasorda to headline LA's $10M ASC groundbreaking
Tommy Lasorda, a former Los Angeles Dodgers player, will headline the groundbreaking of the Orthopaedic Institute for Children Ambulatory Surgery Center in Los Angeles. The new surgery center is 13,000 square feet. It houses two operating rooms and six pre- and postoperative suites. The project cost $10 million.

Pre-surgery MRSA decontamination drives down SSI rate in elective orthopedic procedures
Preoperative methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus decontamination decreased the surgical site infection rate significantly among patients undergoing elective orthopedic surgery with hardware implantation, according to a recent study published in JAMA Surgery. HCA defeats opponents: TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center's $17M surgery center project

Despite several dissenters and a denial from the Tennessee Health Services and Development Agency, Hospital Corporation of America's TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center will be moving forward with a surgery center project, according to a Nashville Business Journal report. Opponents of the project include Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., Williamson Medical Center in Franklin, Tenn., and a number of surgery groups. Surgical errors most common ASC errors in Oregon
The Oregon Patient Safety Commission was created to improve patient safety, and has been collecting information which they annually publish, but this year, the percentage of facilities reporting mistakes was down 2 percent from 2013, now at about 11 percent, reports The Bulletin. The most common errors at ASCs were surgical errors, at 53 percent. Infections were at 12 percent and deep vein thrombosis was at 11 percent.
