7 things for ASC leaders to know for Monday — July 27, 2015

Here are seven news updates for ambulatory surgery center leaders to note for July 27, 2015.

1. Anthem reached terms to purchase Cigna, greatly impacting the healthcare landscape. The transaction is totaled at $52.4 billion.

2. Accretive Health is keeping Goldman, Sachs & Co. as its financial advisor to evaluate the company's strategic alternatives to increase stockholder value.

3.  REIT MedSouth, located in Charlotte, N.C., recently acquired seven medical office buildings for $9.5 million. The offices will house an endoscopy center in addition to gastroenterology, oncology and endocrinology services.

4. Vice President Joe Biden attended a health summit in Theranos, Calif., titled "A New Era of Preventative Health Care." He viewed Therano's lab and manufacturing facility and observed its proprietary system.

5. Scientists have devised a new technique allowing them to modify DNA and place it inside living cells, potentially allowing researchers to test new drugs or cure genetic diseases.

6. New Jersey physician, Anthony DelPiano, MD, was sentenced to serve 21 months for accepting more than $180,000 in bribes. He accepted the bribes for test referrals under a scheme devised by Biodigansostic Laboratory Services of Parsippany.

7. Massachusetts nurses are pushing forward a workplace violence bill mandating healthcare providers and unions to collaborate on a comprehensive workplace violence program. The Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development was scheduled to host a hearing at the State House July 21.
