Here are seven news updates for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for Feb. 9, 2015.

 

Laser Spine Institute continues Midwest expansion.
Laser Spine Institute continues its expansion into the Midwest with a new surgery center in Cincinnati. Laser Spine Institute opened the 36,000-square-foot surgery center in Cincinnati. Neurosurgeon Thomas Francavilla, MD, FAANS, will lead the new location.

Anthem hacked, hit will class-action lawsuits.
Less than 24 hours after Anthem announced hackers had stolen the data of as many as 80 million of its current and former customers, the insurer was hit with a putative class-action lawsuit in California, and Anthem is now facing a class-action lawsuit in Alabama over the breach as well. Exact Sciences, Mayo Clinic extend collaborative agreement.
Exact Sciences and Mayo Clinic, based in Rochester, Minn., announced a five-year extension and expansion of their collaboration. The collaboration centers on colorectal cancer screening, surveillance and diagnostics. The new agreement focuses on Exact Sciences' relationship with Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist and co-inventor of Cologuard David Ahlquist, MD.

Elite Surgical Center opens in California.
Anesthesiologist Nosrat Khajavi, DO, opened the Elite Surgical Center in Fremont, Calif.
The multispecialty surgery center offers orthopedic, gastroenterology, pain management, podiatry, gynecology and bariatric surgery services. The center is open Monday through Saturda

Joint Commission turns 40.
The Joint Commission is turning 40 years old in 2015, and much has changed since the organization began.  The organization was founded as the Accreditation Council for Ambulatory Health Care, with its founding meeting occurring on May 9, 1975.

FDA Commissioner to resign.
After serving at the helm of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for six years, Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, MD, plans to step down at the end of March. Read the full report on Becker's Hospital Review.

NorthPointe still aims to open ASC.
NorthPointe Health & Wellness Campus in Roscoe, Ill., a part of Beloit Health System, failed to receive a certificate of need for a $1.4 million freestanding emergency care center, but the provider is now proposing a $16.3 million ambulatory surgery center project. The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board issued an "intent to deny" the health system's application, but a final decision will not be issued until this spring.
